Extraction systems are a must in any commercial kitchen. They clear smoke, grease, and increase the overall working air quality in your kitchen.

Their main function is to maintain health and safety by extracting carbon monoxide and other dangerous fumes from the kitchen. These systems also extract grease and fat particles, reducing the risk of fire or falling ill and reducing any odour generated whilst cooking.

At Vestcom Ltd we can carry out a site survey to provide a bespoke canopy to suit your exact requirements, as no two kitchens are the same and the correct extraction system is essential for a healthy, productive kitchen.

We can organise the custom fabrication of your bespoke wall or island mounted canopy or supply an off the shelf canopy for your kitchen depending on your needs and install the full extract system, inclusive of ducting and extraction fans, to have you up and running as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible.

We supply leak-free ductwork with minimised bends to allow for the smooth flow of the extracted air and odour. Our ductwork is also fitted with the latest noise and odour reduction technology in order to meet the legal requirements. In the event of kitchen extraction fan failures, gas interlock system will cut-off the gas flow to your system to avoid the build-up of gas.

This will ensure a safer environment and will conform to mandatory government requirements in all commercial kitchens using gas appliances.

Frequency of cleaning

The regularity of cleaning your kitchen extract system depends on the hours of work that the kitchen sees per day.  Annual cleaning is a must for all kitchen extract systems, but depending upon the intensity of work, more regular cleaning may be advised.

It’s important to note that even though your staff may clean the visible areas of the ducts and extraction system, more intensive, deep cleaning is necessary for the kitchen extract system to comply with regulations.

This requires trained teams and the right equipment to do so, since some parts of the system are hard to reach, and untrained cleaning of these places might end up doing more harm than good.

Daily operational hours, the recommended cleaning interval for heavy useage(12-16 hours per day) would be every 3 months.  For moderate use (6-12 hours per day) it would be every 6 months and for light use  (2-6 hours per day) the recommended useage would be 12 months.

Fire Dampers are not acceptable in Kitchen Extract systems as they can become unserviceable with exposure to grease and become impossible to clean.  Excessive heat in Kitchen Extract duct can activate the fusible links in fire dampers. (BS 9999:2008 Clause 33.4.3.2 and 33.4.4.2). Commercial kitchens must have separate and independent extract systems (BS 9999:2008 Clause 33.4.7).

Commercial kitchen extract ductwork should be tested for Type A (fire outside) and Type B (fire inside.) Both tests are required to prevent flammable grease from either catching fire when it passes through an adjacent compartment or, if the grease itself is already alight maintaining the fire within the duct, or causing a fire to start within the adjacent compartment by radiant heat. Under DW 172 (Specification for Kitchen Ventilation Systems) and TR 19 (B&ESA publication, guide to Good Practice- Internal Cleanliness of Ducts). It is recommended that Fire Rated Access Doors should be installed at three metre intervals or a change in aspect or direction where possible for future cleaning and inspection. Internal surfaces must be smooth to enable easy cleaning. Square Bends with turning vanes should be avoided.

All systems are manufactured and installed to satisfy the requirements of recognised ductwork specifications including DW 144 and DW 172

I have had Vestcom come in and do various works for me around the school for the past 10 years and I have known Darren for over 17 years. The work that I have seen has been to a high standard and they have always left the site clean and tidy. Their workforce are always very helpful in what I’ve asked them to do and I would definitely recommend them.

Carlton Ferrett
Clerk of works at Heathmount School

We have worked with Vestcom on a number of jobs over the last few years, both big and small. We have found them to be a very professional and supportive company who take a lot of pride in their installations. One of the things that we have always liked about Vestcom is that they include for everything in their design and costs where a lot of other ductwork companies don’t seem to do that and it leaves you spending more at the end of the job. Darren Smith, their managing director, is helpful and always available for surveys, they would be our first choice

Dominic Wilford,
Managing Director at D-Air Services Ltd

We sub-contracted the services of Vestcom to install & commission several heat recovery systems with exposed ductwork within a newly built public library. The works were completed in a timely manner and to an excellent standard which impressed the client and all involved. We could not recommend Vestcom enough for any ductwork or ventilation installations you may have!

Darren and his team at Vestcom have carried out many air conditioning ductwork installations for us over the years. Most notably the manufacture and installation of a large ducted system over two floors of a factory, under very difficult site conditions. In addition to the insulated ductwork, the project included the manufacture and installation of displacement terminals and installation of several roof fans. The project was completed on time and to the satisfaction of our very demanding client. We have no hesitation in recommending Vestcom for projects of this nature.
